SECTION 16134
CABLE TRAYS
This guide specification has been prepared by GS Metals Corp. to assist design professionals in the preparation of a specification section covering metal cable trays of the types and sizes included in NEMA VE 1.
Since it has been prepared according to the principles established in the Manual of Practice published by The Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) including the use of section numbers and titles from the 1995 Edition of MasterFormat, this guide specification may be used in conjunction with most commercially available master specifications sections with minor editing.
The following should be noted in using this guide specification:
- Optional text requiring a selection by the user is enclosed within brackets, e.g.: Section [01330] [_____].”
- Items requiring user input are enclosed within brackets, e.g.: Section [_____ - _______].”
- Optional paragraphs are separated by an OR” statement, e.g.:
**** OR ****
- Metric equivalents to inch-pound units follow the inch-pound units and are contained within parenthesis. Metric measurements are rationalized units based on the SI system of measurement. Delete either the inch-pound or metric units of measure depending on project requirements; do not include both units in a project specification, as conflicting requirements could result.
This guide specification is available in both hard copy and a variety of electronic formats to suit most popular word processing programs and operating platforms. Please contact GS Metals Corp. at (800) 472-8007 for additional copies or for information on available electronic formats.

1.3 DESIGN AND ASSEMBLY REQUIREMENTS
Edit the following paragraph to suit project requirements.
- Design Requirements for Cable Trays:
- Uniform Live Load Plus Dead Loads: [____] lbs/ft ([__] N/m).
- Maximum Deflection: [L/180.] [____.]
- In accordance with [applicable code.] [________.]
- Accommodate expansion and contraction of assembled linear trays according to their ambient environment per NEMA VE1 and VE 2.
- Seismic Design: Conform to NUSIG requirements.
Alternately, the NEMA VE 1 Class designation may be used. The VE 1 designation indicated below is the working load designation and the support span in feet. The tray width, depth, and style must also be considered with respect to load and allowable deflection.
Available Support Spans: 8, 12, 16, and 20 ft.
Working Load Designations:
A - 50 lbs/ft
B - 75 lbs/ft
C - 100 lbs/ft
For example, a cable tray required to span 20 ft between supports while supporting a cable static weight of 80 lb per ft is designated Class 20C - “20"' for the span and “C” for the load designation.
Consult NEMA VE 1 and VE 2 for additional information, safety factors, and requirements for seismic design.
- Design Requirements for Cable Trays: NEMA VE 1 Class [________].
1.4 SUBMITTALS
Edit the following to coordinate with Division 1.
- Submit under provisions of Section [01330] [_____]:
- Product Data: Provide data for fittings and accessories.
- Shop Drawings: Indicate layout, tray type, support framing, components and fittings, connections, dimensions, support points, finishes, and accessories.
- Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate application conditions and limitations of use stipulated by Product testing agency specified under Regulatory Requirements. Include instructions for storage, handling, protection, examination, preparation, and installation of Product.
- Submit under provisions of Section [01780] [_____]:
- Project Record Documents: Record actual routing of cable tray and locations of supports.
1.5 REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS
Delete this article if regulatory requirements are addressed in Division 1.
- Conform to requirements of NFPA 70.
Authorities having jurisdiction regarding electrical code enforcement accept Underwriters Laboratories listing and classification as evidence that a product meets adequate safety standards and, in the case of classification, is suitable for the classified environment or application. Many authorities also accept similar listing and classification from other testing agencies.
The second choice in the paragraph below permits other testing agencies, including Underwriters Laboratories, to provide such a determination.
- Products: Listed and classified by [Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.] [testing firm acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction] as suitable for the purpose specified and indicated.
1.6 FIELD MEASUREMENTS
- Verify that field measurements are as [indicated [on shop drawings].] [instructed by manufacturer.]
PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
- This section is based on products by GS Metals Corp. Edit the following to coordinate with Division 1.
- Substitutions: Under provisions of Section [01630] [_____].
2.2 CABLE TRAY

Select finish required considering environment conditions. Two categories of galvanizing are available for steel trays only; a natural mill finish or anodizing is available for aluminum. Special paint or PVC coating may be applied to steel and aluminum trays that have been properly prepared and primed.
Select the coating finish based on the environment in which it is placed:
- aluminum is versatile and suitable for most environments,
- a normal interior environment may only require a shop galvanized steel sheet coating,
- an exposed exterior environment may require a hot dip after fabrication galvanized coating,
- a corrosive environment (interior or exterior) will probably require a protective special paint or PVC finish on steel, or stainless steel
Carefully edit one or both of the following paragraphs to suit the selected or preferred GLOBETRAY product.
- Steel Tray:
- Construction: [Fabricated of two side rails and bottom.] [One piece of rails and bottom.]
